The variety Heliotropium Marine is a popular variety of purple flowering Heliotropium. This majestic variety of Heliotropium produces large (up to 150mm wide) purple-violet flower heads throughout the warmer months and when it is not flowering the ornate purple-pearl tinged leaves provide an elegant touch of texture to any landscape. Most of all, the brilliant floral displays are set-off by a delightful vanilla fragrance that intensifies in the evenings, providing a nice addition to gardens that are close to entertainment area, garden paths and other areas around the house and garden. Like most Heliotropium varieties, the variety Heliotropium Marine is frost-tender, therefore should only be planted after the last frosts in very cold areas frost prone regions such as those in southern Australia. In warmer climates, Heliotropium Marine is successfully grown as a perennial, generally in sheltered or semi-shaded aspects. Heliotropium varieties are also known as the Turnsole plant, Cherry Pie plant, Common Heliotrope or the Fragrant Heliotrope and can contain certain toxins, therefore should not be planted in areas where plant material may be ingested by children or family pets.
