Pistacia Chinensis, a member of the Anacardiacea family (like the cashew) a native of China, is one of the most versatile and rewarding ornamental trees available and is grown widely in gardens and landscapes in temperate regions. Pistacia Chinensis provides a stunning display for all seasons. Whilst the plant is deciduous by mid-late Winter, it quickly follows with a display of distinct glossy green pinnate leaves in Spring and Summer followed by golden yellow and orange leaves at the start of Autumn turning to a bright crimson red colour by mid-late Autumn.
Pistacia Chinensis is an ideal feature plant in a range of applications including streetscapes and public spaces, as the plant is generally very hardy and can handle a wide range of growing environments, including very cold environments (frost-hardy to -20oC).
Pistacia Chinensis is also suitable as a bonsai, provided the germinated seeds are grown in a low-organic matter soil, to ensure the plant is not to vigorous. The tap-root should either be snipped or curled (J-rooted) within the first 8-weeks, to ensure the plant remains suitable for bonsai.
