Gibbaeum Heathii Living Stones is an intriguing succulent originating from South Africa where it grows in rock crevices in the Little Karoo region. Unfortunately, due to aggressive harvesting by succulent collectors, Gibbaeum Heathii Living Stones, also known as the Living Stones, is rarely found in its native habitat.
Gibbaeum Heathii Living Stones is highly sought after because of its small round pea-like balls that can resemble a rock, with the emerging flowers (when clumped together) resembling a split rock. As the plants mature, they produce a finely-cut and scented, white and/or pink daisy like flower (not dissimilar to a Livingstone Daisy) which can be 4-5cm in diameter, which is a pretty impressive flower to plant size ratio.
Gibbaeum Heathii Living Stones is ideally grown in pots with a free draining mix high in sand, but will also grow in rockeries and a wide range of gardens, and like all succulents is very drought tolerant, making it a favourite for pots and sun-drenched garden beds. The young foliage is generally green, but take on a silver tone as they mature, with the stunningly exotic dusted-silver foliage making this variety a great addition to any garden as the intriguing texture provides great contrast.
At The Climbing Fig, we believe in conservation through cultivation, so why not consider growing this stunning succulent variety, and ensure this valuable biodiversity is conserved. The seeds of Gibbaeum Heathii Living Stones we have on offer have been sustainably sourced, and we look forward to helping other keen gardeners to share the joy of growing this fascinating plant.
Important note: The seeds of all Gibbaeum varieties are very small, in fact tiny. You will need to place the clear seed packet on a white piece of paper and hold up to a bright light to see the seeds. Please do not contact us telling us the seed packet "was empty"! If you are unable to see the tiny seeds, ask someone with better eyesight to assist. Given the small seeds, this variety is best started-off in small (~30mm) coir Jiffy pellets, ideally inside a suitable plant Propagation Kit (also available from our online store).
